Human sorrow springs from three things: to want before it is due; to want more than your share; to want what belongs to others.
Happiness follows sorrow, sorrow follows happiness, but when one no longer discriminates between happiness and sorrow, a good deed and a bad deed, one is able to realize freedom.
Not only is there a right to be happy, there is a duty to be happy. So much sadness exists in the world that we are all under obligation to contribute as much joy as lies within our powers.

Good and evil attaching to a person are perishable as bubbles. In the cycles of time they alternate. The wise are attached to neither.

There is no sorrow I have though more about than that, to love what is great, and try to reach it, and yet to fail.
I never saw anything funny that wasn’t terrible. If it causes pain, it’s funny; if it doesn’t, it isn’t. I try to hide the pain with embarrassment, and the more I do that, the better they like it. But that does not mean they are unsympathetic. Oh no, they laugh often with tears in their eyes.
